The existence of gravitational waves appears to be confirmed. This validates the final piece of Einstein’s theory of relativity. This was confirmed when scientists registered and recorded a “chirp” caused by the gravitational waves generated by two black holes crashing into each other. This sound is the first piece of substantiated evidence that gravitational waves do, in fact, exist.
Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss, and Ronald Drever of the LIGO Group are primarily responsible for the groundbreaking discovery. After hearing a blip indicating the collision of faraway black holes, Kip Thorne wrote via e-mail “…it’s as though we had only seen the ocean’s surface on a calm day but had never seen it roiled in a storm, with crashing waves.”
